Reaching Out to Communities

As part of its continuing effort to enhance communication and the relationships between Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) and area residents, the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) initiated a comprehensive community outreach plan. The BWI Community Ambassadors Program was formed in April 1999, when MAA employees began attending regularly scheduled meetings in 14 communities that are impacted by airport operations at BWI. Currently, MAA employees are serving as BWI ambassadors to 20 communities.

Participants in this outreach program submit reports to the program coordinator in the MAA Communications Department within a week after each meeting and personally follow up with their constituents by answering questions and providing information about airport facilities, services and activities. This program complements the work of the BWI Neighbors Committee, which was created in 1983 to serve as a liaison between the airport and neighboring communities. The BWI Neighbors Committee includes leaders from 11 neighboring communities and holds quarterly public meetings at BWI.
